The caffeine found in normal drinks e.g coffee and even energy drinks, doesn't affect me positively or negatively. Habitually I have a double espresso before I go out on a ride though.

Once took half a caffeine tablet though, and my face tingled for about 20 miles(could have been a reaction to another ingredient). Wasn't enjoyable. Not sure how dosages in these gels compare to normal drinks.

Am assuming that the folks on this thread are fast day riders/racers.

I have more time to stop on long rides so prefer the simpler more traditional approach to my need for caffeine injections - pop round the back of a church with a mini stove and a small espresso pot - faster than at home. I think my record (recent) on a long ride was 8 or 9 espressos. Often accompanied by fistfuls of lidl wine gums. No need for gels.

Try it and see what you think, I'm sure we don't all react the same. Gels are foul for example. I like my caffeine in coffee or tea form personally

I'm with you on the coffee, but the high5 gels that have fruit juice in them are very palatable and don't gum up your mouth. Well worth sticking a couple in your pocket for emergencies

Ah, this is obviously some strange usage of the word 'simpler' that I wasn't previously aware of.
I did say it suited rides like mine - often long/tough but not in a hurry and need time to rest/smell the roses anyway. Yes simpler in that it's the simple product, no need to frett about analysing the contents of a tab, way way simpler for all sorts of reasons than going in a caff. Has the required hit, as I know from decades of guzzling espresso. And as I said very very fast.

I'm not suggesting that anyone focussed on crossing a finishing line before fellow cyclists does this.
