My sister-in-law was the lucky recipient of a windfall of over £50,000 and that became the ruination of her and her family. She began to splash out ridiculous sums on 'jewellery' that was real tat on one of those satellite shopping programmes. As she had 'so much money', she didn't need to work so she packed her job in so she could lie on the coach all day to make sure she didn't miss a real gem! In no time at all, she'd frittered all the money away and had nothing coming in to replace it but she was hooked on the thrill of buying more and more tat. She would show it to us proudly and we don't know anything about jewellery but we do know when something is ostentatious and worthless and all of hers was total junk.
