The virtual chapel looks, somehow, bigger than the real thing. If you ever get the opportunity, a visit to the Vatican is well worth while. Words like breathtaking, stunning etc just don't do it justice.

Agreed, went round earlier this year, absolutely magnificent. I am not in the least bit religous, but was in awe of the works of art, architecture and decor. However, this was counter-balanced by thinking just and how much money and items must have been taken given, over some 2,000 years, to pay for the place. As a museum, fantastic, as a place for a religion to surround itself with so much splendour, slightly disconcerting, imho.

I agree entirely. I am agnostic and just visited the place as part of a 'Grand Tour' that Mrs Blue and I undertook as our honeymoon. You have to look upon the art as being created by people who believed in what they were doing at the time.

Very true Blue (sorry, no pun intended there!).

However, quite a lot of the art was taken from those pesky pagan/pre-Christian Romans, you know, the ones that built those magnificent temples etc., that the church then either destroyed on a vast scale or turned into churches. Hey, but history is always "written" by the victors.

It was OK in the flesh but not as impressive as the Pantheon IMHO. I was awestruck when I walked into the Pantheon. It was a truly jaw dropping experience and I found myself rooted to the spot trying to take it all in. My wife had to check that I was OK - seriously!

Vernon, spot on, couldn't agree more. The Pantheon was the building I really wanted to see when I went to Rome, and boy, was I blown away. That was one temple that survived the church's "bulldozers", by being made into a church. Like you, I stood there for ages, simply gawping at the roof, incredible. What did the Romans ever do for us? Haha.

The impact upon me was, perhaps, greater than it was for you because I didn't have a clue what was in store for me. It was one of a handful of 'awe and wonder' moments that have punctuated my life.

Wow, can appreciate that.

Even though I was eagerly awaiting it, it did still completely blow me away. I can truly say that no other building has ever had that much effect on me.

thats cos its generally filled to the rafters with tourists and nuns/priests running around telling everyone to stop photographing it...also the chatter spoilt the serene moment for me....not at all like its in the VR link

I was aware of the 'full room' aspect, although, it sounds like it was worse for you, as we didn't have the priests and nuns, thank goodness - who wants a bunch of priests and nuns spoiling a church!!
