Partiality aside, in what way was Ferris' tackle on the ball carrier in open play in the same league as, let alone similar to, Davies act of retaliation against a non-ball carrier well off the ball?

Ferris' wasn't even worth a YC. Davies was a straight Red and along ban. Point is it should have been 15 v 14. At elite level that creates space.
as much as i hate arguing with a referee ( only gets you a yellow card and playing bans  )
still a tip tackle . you know the letter of the law. I really don't think that with davies back on it made a great deal of difference.the welsh play some damn fine rugby when under pressure- the RWC proved that.
I don't disagree that it should have been straight red for Davies. and a ban for the rest of the season, at all levels. it might get the message across that it is not acceptable. its not a new law for this season .

Well England escaped, thanks to 'Charge down Charlie' and some inept Italy penalty kicking. It was probably too soft underfoot for some motorised sweeping implements to clear the snow away...why didn't England change their shirt colour to something televisually distinct? And get shot of Guscott and Nancy Dallaglio please, Mrs BBC - hackneyed old stuff which I'm sure could be more eloquently put by someone of more recent England/Premiership vintage, perhaps? Sports celebs just taking the Pisa. :cold:

At least it's another win for England, so that is two wins this year which most people did not consider was possible after the complete change of coaches and players after the WC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2nd half was a huge improvement on the 1st. At half time, I feared England would be comfortably beaten... and pulverised in the next 3 matches!

So, I don't know what went on in the dressing room (apart from the substitutions) but England responded well to it and came out a better team. As I said for the Scotland game, the team spirit is there and that is a huge huge thing. They'll also be feeling confident; 2 wins from 2 (both away) is a great start to the campaign - even if the draw has been kind to them.

They'll know they'll have to raise their game from here on in. Home advantage will count for something but they'll know they still have to perform to get the crowd behind them. I feel it's a big ask however and will be a real test of the new England. I personally don't count on them winning another match this season but you never know, stranger things have happened. I do know that I will certainly be watching their next game, and hoping to see them both play well and give it a damned good go! From what I saw in the 2nf half yesterday, they're on track for that.

Point is Davies' wasn't a tackle at all. You can't tackle someone who isn't the ball carrier. You can't tackle someone you just 'cleared out' from a ruck.

other material differences were that David dropped his victim whilst Ferris didn't.

Looking forward to seeing if Wales can get some momentum in their campaign this afternoon and use home advantage to the max...

England looked like 15 sulky teenagers who didn't want to be out in the cold y'day for the first half. Thank goodness for 'charge-down charlie'.

The Italy/England game was good right up to the point when England took the lead  On the showings so far, Italy look as if they could beat Scotland.

I suppose I'll watch the Wales v. Scotland game, but I have no great hope that Scotland will deliver anything other than errors.

^^^^I'm still going with my predictions that Italy are capable of some surprises. Yes, both tries yesterday were the result of appalling errors (most un-Fodenlike), but otherwise they were pretty lacklustre in attack, and England defended well.

England need to up the ante in attack too however. They won't survive on flukes for much longer (OK, I know Charlie makes his own luck) Perhaps they will have found confidence from the two wins so far, but there was little evidence of creativity yesterday.

Owen Farrell....... who needs Johnny now England have a new darling golden boots................ 'kin awesome kicking. I expect his dad's a bit chuffed.

I agree, Farrell is shaping up to be one hell of a player. His kicking is solid and consistent, he's got nerves of steel. I saw him for the first time in the Saracens v Biarritz H cup game and was really impressed by his composure in slotting home 5 out of 5 penalties.

Italy's biggest weakness, other than decision making on and off the park, is not being able to field a world class kicker for 80 minutes. Penalty kicks win test matches.

There's truth in that - particularly the conclusion. But I'm not sure that's Italy's only major failing. Other than two flukes yesterday, they haven't looked like threatening the line at any point, against either France or England. Lots of huff, puff and grunt, but no real penetration.

Cracking match today so far! And they say they only really turn it on against England...
