Fixed gear to go faster? Errr, no.

Errr, yes. I go fixed, and I go faster than anyone on a geared bike. True, there's a point beyond which you can't go any faster, tho' if you could shift up, you could...but it's a pretty high point. I wind out somewhere in the low '30s...don't see many people on hybrids/fat tyres or any kind of geared bike at that altitude.

Thats a fairly bold claim, other than the slight weight advantage of not having the gears, which is negligible and the slightly more efficient transmission I can see no massive advantage unless it really does turn you superhuman cos you cant coast.

Currently on rather threadbare Conti 28's on my hybrid, when my mate at work gets his act together and brings in the 25's he is selling me I will have some slightly narrower tyres, went last winter on some squashy Michelin trail tyres, 32 mm, god I noticed a difference when I put the Conti's back on, think I will stay on slicks this winter.

Anecdote.

Equally on my geared hybrid I'm faster than all the fixies I've met.

Mostly because we're both dedicated commuters, who ride in pretty much everyday. This makes you fitter than all those who don't. It's not the bike. it's the legs.

True, there's a point beyond which you can't go any faster, tho' if you could shift up, you could.

As you acknowledge.

Well I have done the commute home on Hybrid with Skinnies as fast I have done on my Roadbike.

This is great news cause I know for a fact I can go much faster on my roadbike as I use it more and more.

Don't half make a difference.
Gone from 37's to 28's which are a lot slicker. All for £26 for the pair to.
Bearing in mind it was windy and I am not feeling 100% I pretty much matched my best ever time coming home on the Hybrid.

It's so quicker too.

I've got Schwlabe Marathon 32's on my tourer. The rims will take 28's, so I was toying with the idea of getting some 28's. Any recs on which tyres to get and will it make much difference to go from 32 to 28?
