if you have half decent wheels and tyres then all you should have to worry about is staying on the bike. Bad pot holes can easily have you off.

I've took to commuting on my full sus MTB lately, at least if I do hit one of our local holes I stand a chance of staying upright, the roads here in Dudley West Midlands are horrific and most fixes by the local council end as a seriously rough bodge only to appear year after year. The three other local councils do a good job with a clear difference in quality of repairs. Riding my little motorbike has become rather scary even driving a car is bad ! I certainly would't want to go back to a skinny tyred road bike, the ride would be much too harsh. Having said that my commute is under 3 miles each way so the extra wieght and rolling resistance of the fat tyres is not too much of a problem !

The wheels on my Allez Elite are lasting better than those on my Cannondale hybrid, well the back one is (front never been an issue) I think because anticipating 16 stone of me and luggage I specified to Paul at Rick greens a sturdier rear wheel which he duly built, still perfectly true 2,000 ish miles later wheras the Cannondale factory build kept breaking spokes and is out of true and slightly ovoid, I dont ride it any differently !

So, big thumbs up for hand built wheels and Pauls wheel building.
