sleeping bags in greece

hi there,

Me and a mate are planning a trip from venice to athens from 15th august to 22nd September. We thought we'd kill two birds with one stone - cut down on weight and not sweat in our tent by not taking sleeping bags with us.

Is this madness? Will we freeze in cold summer nights? Or would a sleeping bag liner and a jumper do the trick?

any advice or experience is appreciated,

I couldn't afford spending £110 just on a self inflating matress - however, I am after one, just not in that price range.

Surely one from gelert or vango for around £40-50 should do the trick?

A down mat in Athens when both weight and the additional warmth isn't a requirement? Mental!
I'd personal suggest (as it's what I use in the summer) an Alpkit Base 120 (http://www.alpkit.com/sleeping-mats), 2/3's length and packs down small. A quarter of the price too. The ground should still be sufficient warm from the daytime to not need anything thicker
Combine that with a fleece liner like the Gelert one (google it, comes in about 10-15 quid)

In the late 80's a mate and I went island hopping (mid August) and arrived at our first island, Naxos, mid afternoon. We got somewhere to stay the first night but they didn't have a room just a roof and some big cardboard boxes for us to use as matresses. We had a reasonable nights sleep with sleeping bag liners to keep us warm. I don't think you'll suffer too much in a tent. We didn't, under the stars, on a house roof .

Going back to Greece, on Friday, for a couple of weeks but as I'm a little older I don't intend to rough it this time, though doing 2 islands Skiathos and Skopelos but now, with accomodation booked.

I've been out cycling in Greece for a couple of weeks. Right now it's really hot - even at night. A sleeping bag liner would be enough at these temperatures. But you'll be here later so I don't know if it'll be as hot.

Mental! Not at all.

I used the same Exped Down 7 mat travelling down through Europe in November and December (cold, but not freezing nights) and later in Victoria and South Australia (HOT nights - 35+) and felt comfortable sleeping.

And the mat rolls up into a small, light and compact bag taking little space in a pannier.

Try it before you knock it.

Hehe, okay, that may be the case but I think most will baulk at the ton price tag

I use a thermarest Prolite Plus. It is expensive but I totally agree that something decent to sleep on is worth the weight and the cost. Put it this way: it's a hell of lot cheaper than staying in hotels.
