Hey all,

So, I've been pottering around on my knobblies (and by that, I mean avoiding biking entirely because they're dangerous on the road and i nearly broke my neck with them...) and I've decided after xmas, i'm going to buy some proper semi slick road and start getting out and losing some weight. Any recommendations? I can probably spend about 60 quid. I had a look on Evans and they go from 20 to 50 quid a tyre, so I'm not too sure. I'm not sure on the wheel size but I know it's 20 inch frame.

Cheers.

Look on the side of the tyre and the size will be on there.

I ran Schwalbe City Jet tyres (26"x1.9") on my mtb last year. They are semi slick and fast rolling but also cost about around £30 a pair with a certain amount of puncture protection built in.

As someone pointed out at the time, Schwalbe also make Marathon tyres which also roll well, but are a bit heavier and are even better protected from the fairy, for not much more cash.

City Jets are only £12 a piece including p&p nowadays from both CRC and On One. Since narrower is lighter you may want to find out which width (1.5" or 1.9" in this case) is not too narrow for the rim.

If your rim is narrow enough Conti Sport Contact 1.3" is lighter and faster still and offers great puncture protection.

As it's a hybrid 26" tyres might be slightly too small.
Which shows exactly why I despise the word *spit* hybrid *spit*.

If you are looking for 26" road tyres, I'm another in support of City Jets. I have a pair in 26x1.5 on my rigid MTB which have been great.

If the OP dosnt know what tyres are on his bike , what sort of bike has he got i am sure google will let us know what tyres are on the bike !

When i had a MTB i loved city jets as well , very cheap and do a grand job .I ran 26x1.5s as well.

ERRR just a thought is it dangerous because of ice ? if so nothing much will stop that except getting studded tyres .

It's a hybrid, not sure on the make at the moment, and I'm not inclined to check as it's currently -7 outside....

I'm not going to go out riding when it's icy anyway, I'm waiting till after it's gone. I'll have a good look at City Jets anyway, they're cheap and a lot of people recommend them.

Yes, would also reccomend the city jets.
Have 26x1.5 on my mtb for the last few months and have been excellent, good grip in the wet as well. Seem to have good protection as well as the only air loss i have had has been a on different back tyre after they cut the hawthorne hedges.

A pattern is forming here - i have city jets on my MTB at present as i used to use it for the commute. MASSIVE improvement over the knobblies i had before (although they might be going back on for use as a snow bike at this rate!

I found them difficult to fit until someone here suggested talcum powder around the rim as a dry lubricant, then they went on much better

Ah, ok, thanks for the tip. Never fitted bike tyres before so worth knowing!

Just a (very stupid) question, is that price on the city jets per tyre or per set? It doesn't say and I don't want to order 1 and only get one, or 2 and get 4.

All depends .....
This site is £11.99 per tyre so you need 2.......

Just make sure you have 26" wheels rather than 700c( 622) by checking the tyres that are already on or looking at the specs in a manual , or even post a pic of your bike im sure the knowledgeable here will be able to determine what you have
