Slough Lane

Where I live, right out in the wilds of North-East Essex, we have lots of roads called "Slough Lane".

We also have lots of "Dead Lane"s.

Anyone know why? What does "Slough Lane" refer to?

Off the top of my head, snakes or Ricky Gervais but I don't think either of them are right.

Interesting!
I "found" an interesting,to me, place whilst on holiday near Vancouver, it was called Finn's Slough (pronounced slew) and was like an oxbow lake, a tidal inlet from a river. It would appear the English 'Slough' has the same meaning with a different pronunciation.
