There was a review in Singletrack magazine (issue 77) recently and it was very positive about the SLX brakes. They punch way above their price range and offer the same quality as more expensive brakes such as XT.

SLX are great. Only downer with Shimano brakes is that when they break you generally have to replace the entire leaver / hose / caliper - they don't do any small parts spares.
You can get a pair of XT from rosebikes for £125ish at the mo so that might be worth considering too.
