I've been researching tents for a long time now, and looking for the ideal compromise between weight, size and price. I have to say, though, that one of my criteria is that it should be a dome tent - the reason for this is that I've read enough accounts of people of long tours who have ended up setting up camp in places where you can;t put pegs in the ground - places like car parks or under bridges or on beaches or on rocks. The beauty of the dome tent is of course, that you can set it up without putting in pegs. You can weigh it down from the inside with panniers, if need be.
I have a budget of about £100, and a weight limit of 2.5 KG. It also has to have enough room to sit up in (so much easier for getting dressed).
The best two tents I found were the Highlander Forces 2:

And the Tesco 2 man tent.
I know, I know, Tesco, not good. But I have both tents, and once you swap out the Fibreglass poles for aluminium (£30 Decathlon), both tents are under 2.5 KG (the tesco tent is 2 KG, the Highlander 2.3 KG, and they are really well designed - both share a similar design (two pole pole crossover, but narrower than a normal dome tent). The Highlander has a decent sized porch, and is green, which makes for good camoflage when wild camping. The Tesco tent is actually a bit better made, but is grey with orange trim. The great thing about the Tesco tent is that it's reduced to £15 at the moment.
Both tents pack down small enough, the tesco one a bit smaller. They both take a bit of modding, in that you need to buy new poles, and with the Tesco tent, you need to put eyelets in the pole tabs, but for someone with a bit of technical knowhow, this is no problem. Personally, having both, if I had to take one, it would probably be the Tesco tent. it;s lighter, slightly bigger, and except for the lack of a real porch and the orange trim (which I would paint if need be), seems ideal.
