I have one of these in good working order, and was amazed to see one going for £30 plus P&P on that auction site, with time yet to run !

I'll pop mine up and see what happens with it..

They have lots of drawbacks compared to LED lights, such as a heavier battery.
I tried some a couple of winters ago but they were completely overpowered by my LED lights rendering them practically useless.

They did me fine on my commute along unlit country roads, but a modern LED torch with a spare battery is so much brighter and ten times more convenient. Plus they took an age to put on & off the bike !

I paid £20 for my set about five years ago - but I couldn't believe how much a used set was going for on ebay...

At the time they were the dogs, for the money, as bright as it got. Ive got a Smart halogen somewhere, with a blue hued flashing LED incorporated into it, three modes, beam, normal and flashing LED....each successively using more and more power. main beam on a new battery was 2 hours maybe.
Thats where they fall down, the lead acid batteries. Leave it flat for a summer and it'll probably be irrepairably damaged. The only consolation is a new battery isnt too expensive if you shop around.
On a winter commuter, where looks isnt too important, they will still do the job.

Mine's in a lot better order than this one http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Smart-Hal...ghts&hash=item19d50b14f8&_uhb=1#ht_535wt_1344 so I'll pop it up & see what I gte for it. There's another set on there with 6 days left to run already selling for £20 plus post.

Those used to be some of the best lights around. Now totally eclipsed by LED technology.

Not surprised they sell on ebay - I've found I can get good money for obsolete and outdated stuff including computers there, and if someone is prepared to pay for it I'm delighted for anything to be reused rather than go to the landfill site

They were just lying idle in my garage. I last used them on the bike at the end of 2011.

I've always been careful to keep the battery in good shape, though.

I still use mine - have spent about £3 at Maplins making crude backup battery packs from 4xNimH batteries and some cable. Agree that modern LED lights knock spots off it but it does fine for a 4 mile commute, especially as I can lock the bike up securly & so don't need to take the light off very often.

Still got my old BLT light set up, but the charger died a few years back, and my attempt to use a universal lead acid charger only caused lots of smoke and a small fire - in the lounge !!!

My BLT's were the danglies about 20 years ago !! God how technology has changed !

I got bored of taking it on & off all the time, toyed with the idea of putting LED replacement bulbs in (I have one in a 4D Maglite and it is a cracker) but they would have cost at least £13 each. The bag swinging about can eventually mark the frame paint.

The lights still work and light the road up perfectly well enough to commute on unlit roads.

On the whole, though, a new LED torch front light, on 18650 batteries, won out - at £20.00 on ebay.

The lights are now selling for more than I paid, with a day left to run and 39 people watching the auction. Obviously a collector's item now as BSRU said !
