Both fridges in my house have taken to smelling something awful for the last couple of months; coming back to uni last week the fridges were almost empty so decided to take all the shelves out and wash the lot- including the inside as well. To no avail! The rank smell is still present. I'm not exactly a fan of cleaning so I don't want to wipe it all out again, any ideas what the cause might be?

Cheers

I know this form experience... could be that someone has spilt milk or eggs or summat so that it has got into the folds of the rubber door seal. I used soapy water and a J-Cloth to clean out the mank from the folds... solved the problem. It wasn't a pleasant job, but neither's cleaning an old man's bottom on Christmas morning.

(but I'll save that story for another time)

some fridges have a hole near the bottom where the water from the fridge drains into. At the back of the fridge near the bottom there will be a tray. I suspect its full with water from fridge contaminated with milk/blood from raw meat etc...(there'll probably be a good coating of fur on it)
poke the hole in the fridge to empty any debris there into the tray.

Empty the tray and clean round the back of the fridge if there's been overfill.
That'll sort it.

Once you've got rid of what's causing the smell - cut a couple of lemons in half, cover with clingfilm on a plate, nuke them on high for a couple of minutes or so, pop in the fridge, remove clingfilm and leave for a couple of hours. Then repeat.

Do as meenaghman says. It happened to our fridge when some blood from a joint of meat spilled. The blood dripped out through the drain hole and into the tray which sits above the compressor. The tray is designed to allow water to evaporate when the compressor warms up. When blood warms up it stinks to high heaven. Clean out the tray really well and your smell problem may disappear.

Good luck

Stated before this post as well, almost guaranteed this is what it is. Utterly rank when it happens...easy to solve.
