Smoking in Cars

My parents smoked in the car with 3 kids but that was then..
some still think its ok to smoke and drink while pregnant..

It's interesting that before this, legal impositions down the years were primarily to do with safety - seat belts, where children sit, mobile phones etc. Isn't the smoking ban the first on health terms rather than road safety (inside the cabin rather than engines etc)? I wonder whether this changes the definition of private space?

Oh and to join in with the when I was...Both parents smoked, surviving one still does and had four kids in car.
Then again, quite often on school runs or birthday parties you would have one kid in the front, four to five in the back seats and two to four kids in the boot of the Cortina estate flicking V-signs at oncoming drivers

I know kids today are safer strapped into their little cocoons but I can't help feeling they're missing out on the fun I had travelling in the pre-health and safety days.

Bang on. Obesity is a far larger drain on NHS resources than smoking.

Indeed it is. For every pound the NHS spend in treating smoking related illnesses, the NHS receives 6 from tobacco taxation.

I agree, no one with a braincell should smoke around kids, but this really is becoming a nanny state. I'll be stuffed when farting n cars with children present is outlawed!

As of today adults are banned from lighting up in a car if there are kiddies in there with them.

Surely even the most ardent smoker doesn't need a law to tell them to stop doing something so flipping stupid, or am I living I a wonderful la-la land where even smokers can be expected to use common sense when enjoying their hobby?

It has to be law for some people to take any notice, I pointed out this morning to a bloke at the local petrol station that he had parked in the disabled bay, to which he said "its private land I can park wherever I want, learn you law" , I pointed out it had nothing to do with Law, its called decency and having a thought for others, he said something I didn't hear so I did the right and proper grown up thing and called him a Kn*b Head, that didn't go down to well but that's life.

There's a couple I've known now for quite a few years and both their newborns were smoked over while being held and both were taken to the pub at a couple of days old when smoking was still allowed. I smoked at the time and even I thought it was apalling. So yes,people need telling.

As for the op, I remember my Grandfather's copy of "Roadcraft" advising against the lighting of pipes whilst awheel.
