The funny thing is I don't know many cyclists who ride for the environment. My impression was that most of us do it because it's more fun, more convenient, cheaper, and just a better solution for us. I don't feel any different using my car, and I think a lot of us probably feel the same way? Boris, I realise you were being sarcastic.
Who on earth does it for the environment lol... we are normal people not some sort of hippies in rainbow coloured clothes

Why is it that so many drivers and journalists seem to attribute cyclists with these sorts of things, at least the anti-cyclists versions of them? Is it a deep-seated insecurity and defensiveness?

Well surprisingly (or perhaps not) this attribution to cyclists is nothing new. And I quote :-

"He stepped out on to the street, where a passing eagle swooped out of the sky at him, nearly forcing him into the path of a cyclist, who cursed and swore at him from a moral high ground that cyclists alone seem able to inhabit."

Douglas Adams, The Long Dark Tea-time of the Soul, 1998 (end of Chapter 10).

I am, in actual fact, a left wing, bearded, feminist, vegetarian (well, pescetarian technically but you straights wouldnt know what that means), Guardian reading, pacifist whose primary reason for cycling is my concern for the environment.

It's no wonder you daffodils hate me. Ha ha! fark you all!

With that comment, you are exhibiting exactly the same type of attitude as the drivers and journalists.

Its the same with any kind of out group that is doing something that can often be attributed to them trying to make things better in some way. Environmentalists, vegetarians, vegans, feminists, social justice activists, keep-fit entheusiasts, healthy eaters, health and safety officiers, compliance officers etc etc etc

Dans right. Aluminium is one of the nastiest, most energy intensive materials to create. Ain't no way Mother Earth is gonna hug me for riding my bikes.

I'm not a vegetarian, though I once came close - one day I forgot to remove the gherkin from a Big Mac.
