The only chain I have ever broken was a Shimano. (Fortunately about 20m from the end of my ride!) I solved this by buying KMC chains from then. I do carry a spare joining link, (10 speed). My wife sometimes rides a 9 speed. Would the 10 speed link do for either? Or is it a 9 speed I carry? I guess I am thinking it will be slightly too large for the 10 speed chain and should get us home.

It amazes me how many people are put out of action by a broken chain when most of the time it's a five-minute fix with a chain tool and a joining link. Like the OP I've helped out several times, even on club runs.

Ironically it has never happened to me (chain break) but I've had to lend my chain tool or quick link out a few times.
