Wow every half hour!
I stopped every hour on Leeds Liverpool canal ride and I felt it was too much.

Every two hours is my usual on tour.

Just a Belgian buns or banana or something.. beer and crisps us another good one.

Apparently I am no longer a ‘spring chicken’, and experience has shown that’s what I need to do to keep the pedals turning. While I didn’t object to ‘re-fuelling on the go’ if I was doing a triathlon, if I’m out for a few days I do have the time, and like to ‘stop and stare’.

Munster cheese

Still vividly remember, on my very first cycling tour, 1991, somewhere near Strasbourg.

As was our custom, my friend and I sat down on a bench for the usual lunch of baguette and cheese. This time, Munster cheese, which we unwrapped...

... and the guy on the next bench for up and walked away!

It's a treat for the nose, for sure.

I i always take my 0.4ltr Stanley food thermos. Usually filled up with museli and banana before I leave in the morning. During the day it means I can sit down twice while on the road and have a hot snack.

I must admit all semblance of healthy eating often goes out the window when I go touring. I just eat whatever is convenient and will still be edible after spending a couple of days stuffed into my panniers.

I might take that approach to snacks, but it not so difficult to pick reasonably healthy options, so far as they're available.

I guess a lot depends on where you are riding and what kinds of establishments will be open and when. France - croissants fresh from a boulangerie. UK - Greggs.

In Kintyre, I found there weren't many options for anything once you leave Campbeltown. Arran isn't much different apart from Lamlash or Brodick.

In France Flan natural was an excellent mid day fuel. We also had a test we used to do where you went into the bakers and bought a pair of Paris -Brest cakes, but you had to do it without smirking. The other person watched very carefully, which is what made it silly and tricky.
