I remember cycling down Harry Stoke road with a Rear Admiral walking down infront of me, so tempting to knock off his hat and cycle off!

There that barrier on a cycle route over the M4 near Swindon. I always thought it was designed to let people cycle through as it's wide at bottom for handlebars to fit etc, seemed like a bloody stupid idea though

P.s. what kind of blog is that? Isit just pro pedestrian or something?Posts like just seem sarcastic? http://bristolcars.blogspot.com/2010/09/helmetless.html

I'm so glad that you put about this particular track, as I never knew it existed but am sure I'll find it very useful in the future - thanks!

I never saw the harm in bollards myself, until when out on a CTC ride one member of our group cycled into one and smashed his face up.

The path goes either side of the MOD and there is also another path that leads more directly towards UWE which is my favourite of the 3 (good views over the city and right by the woods) and can then loop down through the park by Stoke Lodge and under the M32 motorway. The aim of these routes is to link up with the Farm Path that goes through St Werburghs, currently it has a missing link to Dovercourt Road ... I think the new bridge to provide a link is due to be completed in Feb perhaps?

You will remember to avoid the bollards won't you

If you have any problems finding the path let me know...

I've found St. Werburghs City Farm, and Dovercourt Road, but not the Farm Path? Sorry - I'm concious that I'm diverting the subject of your thread. I'm happy to continue this conversation privately if not useful to others, or in a new thread if needed?

I certainly will!

Has been reported in the Daily Mail too. Both papers had loads of comments stating that the cyclist in question is:

-blind
-arrogant
-"shouldnt be on the pavement!" (despite the fact he may have been riding around a pedestrian, the Mail article was unclear when I read it yesterday)
- "a stupid scientist, like those climate lot, and should lose his job" (paraphrased, wonder if the comment is still there)
- Looks like that bloke from The Royal Family or something..?
-"shouldnt be on the road" (WTF people, this is about a cyclepath, or are they deliberately obtuse)

-"No point blaming walkers, who are scared for thir loves dodging the cyclists." (on the BEP site, didnt Cheryl Cole sing that in her recent single? ;))

- and finally, paraphrased, that "its his own fault, should have been wearing a helmet". He hurt his face, not the top of his noggin. I've split a lip and chin despite wearing a helmet, I can see how he did, even if he was wearing one.

My view on this - what a waste of money installing bollards. The council there must have more money that sense, or were they deliberately wasting Cycling England money on this?

the council spokesperson said they were put up to improve safety!

Waste of money though - why put them up ?

As far as I can see the South Glos side of Cycling City has a poorer record of how they implement any changes.

It is clearly the work of an idiot.

What about a politely worded email to the council (Streetcare?) simply enquiring as to why they have installed these bollards? You could even reference the article and add that you are concerned about safely.
If worded as a polite enquiry with a concern for safety (rather than attacking/accusing) you may get an response that makes you understand the reasoning behind them and think "ooooh, so that's why they're there".

(Of course, I'll accept that the Christmas period may be making me a little over-optimistic).
