So, as a car driver, how did I do with the group of cyclists? VIDEO

You missed my point: these dumb boxes will label much good driving as bad driving.

.

Are bouncing footballs a serious problem on the roads? Besides, they aren't boxes, you download an app to your phone. It measures driving ability, there is no evidence whatsoever that it will deceive anyone.

If you want a genuine, expert assessment of your driving by a Class 1 Police driver, take the IAM or RoADA Advanced Driving Test and let us know how you got on.

Steve Treloar commented: “Sam’s story shows that Aviva Drive can benefit safer drivers regardless of age or gender.

“Our test phase also showed that the average driving score was 5.6 and that women are less likely to download and use the app than men. We would call on safer women drivers to try out the Aviva Drive app as we believe it could reduce their premiums which would be helpful, particularly with the EU Gender Directive coming in to force next month.

“And while safer drivers could receive a discount of up to 20%, we won’t penalise other drivers if their driving doesn’t come up to the standard set by the app. They’ll just receive the standard premium, but won’t get a discount.

“We believe that by using smartphone technology in this innovative way, Aviva will be able to tailor premiums further to individual drivers - basically the premium will be for you, not people like you.”

I expect insurance companies offer up to 20% off car insurance because they like to make people happy. I don't expect they rely on cold, hard evidence at all.

Oh dear! You are clearly unfamiliar with insurance company marketing gimmicks. There are all kinds of companies offering all kinds of 'discounts' for all kinds of things, achieved by the simple mechanism of adding the 'discount' to the 'standard' premium in the first place. This is absolutely commonplace in the car insurance game.

The application measure braking, acceleration and cornering. Read the link. If someone can drive sensibly for 200 miles they are probably already a good driver so will rated on themselves rather than their peer group. Not all young drivers are idiots but their premiums are high because a lot of them have not received enough training and use the roads like a racetrack, accelerating and cornering wildly as Ronin plays in their head.

I did read it, thank you, and am very familiar with this technology.

Forget black boxes and apps. Go take the RoADA Advanced Driving Test. Get a Gold. Come back and tell us about it and then I'll happily listen to your views on driving standards.

<Sigh> This is one of several such systems. The only one you happened to have heard of is a smartphone app. There are others that are hardware devices.

Nick Moger, one of the founders of Young Marmalade, which offers a young driver insurance scheme with telematics technology, says his company uses a green-orange-red system to monitor driving, emailing drivers to alert them when they have picked up bad driving.

"The very first time, they get an email to say they are driving erratically, if they ignore that then they get another email to say you are on probation for 30 days and if they continue to drive badly we increase the premium by £250," he says.
Manufacturers are convinced highlighting poor driving patterns can improve driving behaviour and reduce the number of accidents.

"It has been proved in Italy - where they are probably the leaders in Europe in accident rates - their rate has dropped by 16% by having black boxes," says Moger.
More than 600,000 cars in Italy are believed to have the devices, many more than in the UK. But Biba expects 500,000 UK cars to have them by July 2014.

It's inevitable, and fair, why should I pay more because of other idiots?

An analysis of 10,000 young driver claims by the Co-op suggests that those with telematics or ‘black box’ insurance are 20 per cent less likely to have a car crash than those with standard insurance.

They also tend to be involved in less serious road accidents, as the cost of a typical insurance claim from a customer with the box is 30 per cent less than from a customer without.
