Just seen the closest near-miss for a while. Crossroads at Goswell road. Girl happily/carefully cycling bike towards crossroad, just gets to the actual junction when a taxi whizzes up behind her and left hooks her/turns left on her. Why he did not wait and let her carry straight on, god only knows, as he rested one arm on the window of his cab. Disgusting driving. I was waiting at lights to cross and looked at her as if to say something and to see if she was ok. I dont think she even noticed! I could not belive what i saw. really bad driving and i've seen some

This is the very reason I maintain that cycling my bike is far far more dangerous than riding my motorbike. Mbikes are dangerous when in the hands of cret, but to a far greater degree the Mcyclist has his own fate in his hands.

Us poor cyclists are open to the whims of cret drivers (and Mcyclists...please don't tar us all with the same brush, any more than car drivers).

There is such a strong case for dedicated cycle routes away from the crets!

well there are clycle lanes and taxis use them to undercut the traffic to turn left on and MB's use them because they do, a bit like ASL's

I was happy to see the other day that when there was a police van a few cars back, no MB's or cars entered the ASL or crossed the white lines like they always do when there are no police about

Or I assume cyclists jumping the lights or riding on the pavements like they always do...

I dont think all cyclists do that, i know i certianly don't

Funny, I drive a cab and are ALWAYS careful of staying out of ASLs regardless of police being there or not.

Not really. There's a strong case for educating cyclists on how to ride safely in traffic, and drivers how to pass cyclists safely, but I don't think that segregating cyclists will help, ultimately.

Good. In the same whay that I never jump a red light or ride on the pavement...

TBH, I don't notice any greater tendency for taxi drivers here to misuse ASLs above other drivers. They're all as good/bad as each other...

Quite right.

But imagine, if it was done properly. If we had a network of cycle paths that equalled the roads, and didn't ever put us at a disadvantage. (I think I may be descirbing Holland here...)

Or, give us the roads, and restrict cars to bumpy glass ridden paths alongside...

cycle paths are generally awful, as you say...broken glass and dozy pedestrians (dangerous) ...I was really talking about proper proper routes... good surfaces, well maintained.

And yes of course, cyclists (and all road users) need to be educated to a higher and safer degree AND practice what they have learned.

I had the following conversation with some idiot who tried to use his car to force me off the road near a roundabout (I had scalped him as traffic was going slowly).

Him: "Why don't you use the bloody cycle path?"
Me: "Well, let me think. Why don't you drive on the cycle path?"
Him: "Because there's people walking on it."
Me: "Exactly. I think you answered your own question there."

I didn't even want to get onto the broken glass, dropped kerbs, crumbling tarmac - didn't want to overload his tiny mind .
