Get your injuries on camera. Some will disappear from view as others start showing.
You'll have parts letting you know they're sore that you never even knew you had. As the pain eases in one area another will make itself known.
Get down on paper what happenned, before & after hitting the door.

Good advice this. If it comes down to battling with insurance companies or if anything goes to court, contemporaneous notes and photos are very useful.

Wow, that's awful! Hope you recover from that quickly! I know that area a bit and can imagine it can get a bit hairy at the best of times.

Had 3 people open their doors on me on my commute this morning, 1 of them saw me and opened it anyway. Thankfully, I had enough space to manouevre.

To paraphrase someone else, it's not surprising that cyclists get hurt by idiots, it's surprising that they don't get hurt more often.

Hi all,

Thanks everyone for all your concern - really feel like I got off quite lightly. Have taken photos of all the cuts and bruises (kept finding new ones, but think I've got them all now!), shoulder is feeling much better and just the tooth to sort out really. My partner is going to fetch my bike today after work but I'm not expecting that to have had any real work done.

Haven't done anything more substantive about claiming or contacting the police - will ring later this afternoon to find out what actually happened about the passenger being charged etc. and then will start speaking with the CTC lawyers.

@Carl1976 - my dentist did talk about the implant as a possible repair but it was quoted at at least 2k which I just can't afford to pay upfront (the dentist did also advise me to take into account further work when claiming for my dental costs so I suppose I could argue that I'd need this money later on...)

Put something in any photo, for comparasion purposes, whose size cannot be disputed. A tape measure/ruler may not suffice. As new injuries show through, photograph them. Others will show as time goes on.

If nothing else get both an incident number & a collision number from the Police for this.

When you get the bike back, make no attempt at riding it. It could later be argued that your injuries were not as bad as tried to make out and that the bike wasn't as badly damaged as you made out. Check the top tube & diagonal behind the head tube for any sign of wrinkling.

hi there - just seen this. you will be able to claim. the exact samething happend to me 5 years ago. passenger opened the door - knowcked me off and i broke my finger badly enough for two lots of surgery and screws. it's all out of shape now nad scarred for life. we sued the drivers insurance company - he is responsible for what happens in his car - he should be makign sure it is safe for his passenger to open the door. i did the exact same as you but there was a left turn and they claimed they were indicating left at the time. which they were NOT. because of this i only got 85 per cent of my claim as th ehighway code says you shuld not go on the inside of a car which is indicating left. the hghway code also says passengers must not open the door onto th eroad or pavement without checking itis safe to doso. can't remember what the rule is now but ti's there. i got about four and a half grand in compensation plus 2 ggrand in lost wages, fifty two pounds for bus fares and one hunder and seventy five pounds for new bike forks. the female copper is talking out of her arse. report it to the police for a crime number and make sureyou have medical records of your tooth injury and any other injudy = i.e go to the doctors re your sore arm etc then contact a solicitor that specialises in pi and put a claim thgouh. it wil come out of ther driver's insurance no problems. hope this helps = sorry about the rubbish typing - had my own accident thsi morning and one arm is not working propertly!

Just spotted this thread . . very sorry, but glad to hear you're on the mend. Yeah, we are generally good at keeping our space from the parked cars (our right side here), but it's the passengers from active traffic (our left side here) that your you aren't ready for . . and we have only so much room to work for proper spacing.

My daughter had her tooth knocked out during baseball practice . . the emergency physician couldn't identify which side of the incisor was the front and put it in backwards, and with bone fragments still in the socket (alveolus). The dentist sorted out later that day. Nasty stuff. My "Dad's composure" was truly tested that day!

Hi all - just a short update. Had my root canal work done yesterday - was mostly fine during the actual procedure, if a little disconcerting, but unspeakably grim once the anaesthetic wore off. All I can eat is soup and I can have a careful suck of a chocolate button. Fun times. Shoulder is healing up nicely though - swelling has mostly gone, now just confined to the immediate impact area (size of an egg I guess), still painful at times but no where near where it was last week. Assorted bruising etc. is on the mend too. Fetch the bike back tomorrow too - £150 to put it right. Going to be a long month!

Anyway, thanks all for your kindness and advice - will keep you posted re: police decision and insurance claim and all that exciting stuff still to come...

Did you get the incident/log number & collision number. Required for any enquiry made, by you, to the DVSA & for completion of the MIB forms.
Both are similar & well worth looking at, as they'll give some indication of what you're expected to provide.

Glad to hear your on the mend.

@classic33 - I have a number of numbers but not sure I have a collision number.... I have an incident number from the phonecall (format: CHSXXXX), a number given to me from the police officers at the time (format: CADXXXXX) and a reference number from the MET (format: MD/XXXXXXX/XX/sk). What would a collision number look like?

It looks as though you already have it. The one from the met looking the most likely.
Purpose behind the collision number is proof it was actually reported as such, not something else.
This should have been done by the officer who attended. I found out later that it was required.

I got a piece of paper at the scene with a CAD reference and then a letter a few days later with the longer reference
