So how much money have you saved this year?

Well I save ~£100 a month that I would have spent on an Oyster card. But then I spend about £20 a month on dry cleaning to keep me in shirts at work.

Totally agree with janm399 though, its all about the freedom. On the very rare occasion that I do use the tube to get to work I hate it.

I don't have to tot it up. Just commuting twice a day, not even taking into account the car/VEL/insurance/fuel/upkeep saves me £4.50 on parking. That's £1,080 a year. Then there's the travel card I no longer need. That's £1,200 a year. I could go on. I'm quids in.

Now lets think about this

About 150 return journeys this year so far, on the underground that £5.70 per return journey. so 150*5.70=£855 - £300 for a new hub...£555 saved, but that probably went on food  LOL

Nothing really as spent it on booze and fags

I only save on petrol as I still have a car that I use at weekends/visiting family etc. Probably work out around £50 a month.

I would like to get rid of the car altogether and get me a little scooter like I used to have (for the days when you just can't be arsed cycling/ill/etc). The other half doesn't want me to though as she's a theatre sister so sees all the RTAs with motorcylists.

It's money down the drain really, insuring/taxing/up keeping it as it's only done 20 000 miles in 8 years.

On paper - over the last 12 months - £1,800 season ticket.

Thing is I'm continually upgrading and want a third bike.

;)
For Gods sake don't let my partner know you can get by on just two bikes! She put her foot down at having two kept indoors (only one in the kitchen apparently).

And I save 100 miles per week of petrol.

As I have transport provided for work I actually save nothing in terms of cash, in fact it costs to maintain the bikes. However I feel that for health and pleasure I'm still the winner!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Absolutely no idea. Probably quite a lot. I got the bike when our first child was born. We would have needed a second car otherwise. So instead we have just the one (admittedly big) car, instead of two.

Likewise, I started biking shortly after my son was born. Not had to get a 2nd car and have not yet needed to upgrade to a bigger "family" car.

No idea how much I've saved - probably broken even or slightly down on cost on petrol when I add up cost of bike, bits, and clothes - but not paying for 2nd car/mot/tax/insurance/etc.. means I've got to be in the black (haven't I )

That isn't the full story; I'm planning on moving further away from work (I think I must be the only person who wants a longer commute...)...

I'm struggling to get in longer routes to work. I can't find an easy way to add a little distance without using a really busy road. The other option is to go round the back of the Malvern hills, but that'll add >10miles and I'll either be late for work or have to leave earlier (and upset Mrs and mini Grhm's morning schedule). I too have wondered about moveing house or job to get a longer commute - so you're not alone (and I suspect we're not the only ones)

My commute consists of walking up two flights of stairs to my attic bedroom office but I've never owned a car, and used to walk to my last job. Looking at it one way I save a huge amount of money every year, or looking at it another way - not a penny.

last year the cost of my season ticket £2200 was slightly more that the cost of the diesel used to use to get to work...

this year though season ticket has gone up, the diesel for my old commute would be loads more than the season ticket... due to the cost now of diesel...

just do what I have done by accident and get on the wrong train where the first stop is say Brookwood, Farnborough or Basingrad, when actually you needed to stop at Woking! lol

I save about £80 in Diesel

I save an 30 mins off my time in the gym X5 2 hours 30 mins a week

A great, "Feel Good" feeling at work as work mates look with green eyes.

Priceless!

It's about 2 litres of diesel per day, so what's that about £2.50 per day on average over this year? I've only ridden to work about 100 days this year: didn't start 'til March after the Winter "rest up" and then days away with work and holidays and so on eat up the rest. That's £250 saved.

On the flipside, I've probably spent a fair chunk of that on bits and bobs for the bike and the odd bit of maintenance and so on. Need to sell a car so I can save on VED, insurance and all that.
