So I pushed the pin all the way out of my chain.....

Chains are cheap enough so I always feel it's better to err on the side of caution and change them if I get any problems. I never had confidence in the chain that I repaired with the hammer. The pins are an interference fit in the links, forcing the pin in slightly out of alignment could potentially over-size the hole and effect the fit.
I'm probably being over-cautious but I'd sooner shell out on the odd chain than suffer a snapped chain when I'm cranking hard up hill. The last time that happened I managed to break my fall on the cross-bar with my gentleman parts! :wacko:

Did have another go at putting the pin back in. As mentioned above, I think I'd stand a much better chance if I had a vice.
But whilst I can get the pin in the chain, I can't ride my bike! :sad:
So cycle shop tomorrow for some quick links.
