My 13 yr old son has Aspergers Syndrome (a form of Autism).
He has just been elected as a Young Campaigner for Autism by NAS (The National Autistic Society).
He applied as he wanted to help others understand how it feels to have Autism. He's a very sensitive and intelligent young man and I'm sure he'll do a great job.

That's brilliant that, what a star! I've been working closely with an adult with autism and our reading 'Why I Jump' by a Japanese boy with autism has really helped our understanding and communication. It really makes a difference having someone who knows something about what it can be like and can communicate it.

RedRider, although he is articulate, he suffers badly with anxiety and won't go anywhere alone and needs constant reassurance.
He doesn't cope well with changes in routine etc, but with a lot of work on our part, he can now go across the road on his own and buy his chips.
To some this may seem really insignificant, but as well as having to go out alone (albeit just across the street), he has to talk to people he doesn't know.

He is gradually becoming more comfortable and will even say thank-you to the bus driver when we get off the bus, although still no eye contact!
I will accompany him to various venues and I'm hoping that by meeting and speaking to others with AS, he will develop some confidence.

He is a lovely lad and I'm sure that one day, he will be a well-adjusted adult with the world at his feet!

well done to you as well . i have a son with Aspergers Syndrome as well and its us parents who have to do so much hard work for our kids to get them to be happy and cope with the stress in their lives . my son aged 21 still struggles with buses as he thinks everyone is weird on them as people can get near or touch him poor lad . he did make it through school (not easy for everyone) and then collage where he did make some friends . he is now at uni now and has a enabler to support him (on his forth year there but only on his second year ) . no new friends here . costing me a small fortune but its want he wants and i will support him as long as i can . still worry a lot about him and his future . my 19 year old is complete opposite he has just come back from 4 months in America . my wife and i say if our 21 year old had 10% of our others confidence he would find the world so much easier . love him very much and would never change him .well done to your lad .
