Its becoming increasingly like a slalom in Co Durham. Usually i use mainly off road but due to the weather over the last month i have road commuted to avoid ice , snow etc. Road surfaces flaking, pot holes a plenty.

Its safer off road around here

The roads of inner city south London are definitely worse. There are a large number of marble sized lumps of tarmac and fill material gathering in the gutters. Quite a few new potholes are opening up but the bigger problem is the deterioration of already poor sections. I find the new holes easy to spot and they currently are not that deep. Some of the older ones have really deepened and the edges have got a lot sharper. There are a few places where I have no option but to ride through a field of potholes along a line that I have found over time to be the least bad option. It's when one of these opens up that I have problems as I can't pick them out as being worse than usual until I'm on top of them. I lost a rear light tonight over one that I knew was there.

As for damage, you have to be able to prove the hole was notified and had been allowed a 'reasonable' time for it to be repaired, or that it was within the repair cycle of the councils - suburban roads have a more 'regular' repair cycle than in the country.

It is possible, but not easy.

Our's have gone from ill-maintained to third-world-countries-roads'-look-better-than-these, and as a previous poster siad, we aren't clear of winter yet, so I'm expecting more snow, more frost, far more cracks & potholes and am cursing the fact that I didn't buy a 'cross bike to commute on!!

Not too good round here. The poor repairs that took place after last years freeze have opened up again, along with a whole host of new ones. Some are actually quite dangerous for all road users. Its not too bad in daylight as you can see them well in advance and take avoiding action. Commuting in the dark is fun!
Even the motorways and dual carriageways have plenty of potholes and surface damage.

(that would be the roads Fnarr)

My commuting roads don't appear to have suffered much. There's a couple new potholes but in general the surfaces are as good as normal. I think the fact that there's very little traffic on them helps.

There's always a lot of gravel off of the tyre tracks though due to the way they resurfaced them last summer (we had 2 months of gravel roads before they had a go at sealing it)

Lots of breaking up at the edges of roads around here, especially on the seams of previous patched-up work. Also lots of detritus close to the kerb.

How much does it cost to Oldham?
The main road near me is pretty much OK- back streets are awful.

Round the back of the velodrome is pure comedy- you'd need a grappling hook to get out of some of them holes!

Our local lanes are in a shocking state. Covered in heaps of loose gravel, potholes that could swallow a bike and lathered in mud. Mrs A and I ventured out for a ride today and encountered several bits of road in the Lincolnshire Alps Wolds still covered in snow. The first bit we came across arrived a little to quickly from around a bend! Bit of flailing about occured.

Good news is that the newly laid roads are still looking very good. And there are quite a lot of those round me.

The bad news is that there is one stretch near me that has gone so bad that they have bollarded it and turned the short stretch into one-way only (just for a metre or two).

Did a 20 mile run today and rode some of my commuting roads, loads of gravel and some really big pot holes. To be honest I am glad that when my commuting road bike was written off by somebody not looking before they pulled out of a junction I used the insurance money to buy a tourer as it can cope with these roads a lot better and does not seem that much slower.

Many of the roads around Derby were like the surface of the moon after last winter, and hadn't improved much over the year. Haven't ridden there since the cold set in (have been on hols since it started to melt). Starting my commute again on Tuesday should make for some interesting riding!

It's no good, going to have to ditch the 23c tyres on my 'audax' bike and get 28s. TBH, I don't find any difference in speed, the 23s just feel different.
