Our local council set up a bulk buying scheme for solar installation. After signing up, it worked out at about £6k for the whole setup which is a bit cheaper than the £14k that my previous electric supplier wanted. There was also a bonus in that the install company had run out of the battery that I ordered so they installed a bigger one for the same price.

I realise we are on the good bit of the year, but since it was installed in April, there has been no electricity imported. The only problem is that I am still waiting for a smart meter so I can get paid for export.

Not on FIT, only 14 panels with east/west split, but we make enough that we sell in the daytime, charge up the batteries and charge up Jo's PHEV cheaply at night, and still Octopus pay us.

We have had a 10.14kW system installed since Feb 2022, with a 16kWh battery, and I reckon payback time is about 8 years. If we had needed a loan to pay for it, then payback would have been longer due to interest payments.
Did you take into account lost interest on the capital?
With Solar arrays the latest thinking is " fill your roof "
I've got a hipped roof, so I'd need triangular panels to do that, which I gather are about twice the price and of unproven reliability. To make matters worse, the hip is the south facing aspect and the smallest area.

Yay! Finally got the export go ahead. Flux, Intelligent Octopus flux or Outgoing Octopus? That is the question.

No idea where we are with ours

It was all working on EDF
export tariff is rubbish but we don;t export much so the better unit cost was more important

but I wanted to move next time

until the "Smart Meter" stopped working

EDF say they will replace it as it is not SMETS2
which is strange as they said they had upgraded it to that

but I am beginning to doubt that they will get it done before this contract ends

which adds another complication

Makes me glad I've not got a smart meter!

I like having a smart meter
I like to be able to see how much electric we are using and I am one of the few people I know who keeps the display unit on view all the time

an engineer that can to fix the meter once asked where it was an was amazed when I just pointed to it
He said they are always in the back of a cupboard in the kitchen - normamly covered in dust
which probably says a lot for how much use the really are in terms of how much the save in terms of CO2 and all that

My 'diverter' to feed excess generation into the hot water does that, without the need to have a smart meter. Tells me what I'm using or generating at any time.

While mine does that, it is up against the cieling in teh study, so not easy to read.

But the solar edge app on my phone, or on the website on a computer, tells me at any time how much is being used, how much is being generated, how much is coming from or going to the battery and the grid. As it is currently just about midnight, there is nothing being generated or going to the grid here

I'm using the " Inverter " app written by the chap who wrote the BBC Basic computer language all those years ago. A free app and the screen is very similar to the one you posted.
Just had our bill for May, we imported 15.2kWh of electricity at an average rate of 0.9p ( Agile tariff ) biggest cost was standing charge at £18.37. Export credit was £94.30 from a 5.25kW array.
Hopefully the sunny weather continues ( grey and wet this morning) and we can build up sufficient credit to see us through the coldest months, target is a zero annual bill🤞

I wish our electricty consumption was at a level that would allow us to generate meaningful 'profit' from exporting.

We had our solar PV setup finally properly reconfigured post house renovations at the end of May, but even so there is zero chance of us every getting to a net surpluse electricity usage over the year.

The EV takes up a huge amount of electricity, and our background usage is quite high at 0.5kW due to having a whole load of constantly networked devices/mesh WiFi etc.

Luckly we are on the FiT traiff for another 10 years+ so gets paid for generation regardless of usage .
