ok putting together a bike ideal for commuting and trying to use parts from around the garage , i found a pr of greensprint solid tyres so thought i would use them and after spending ages longer than normal fitting a pr of tyres they are mounted on bike and have just come back from a quick blast around the block , my only comment is interesting

will advise more as time goes by

Years ago they used to do tyres with lots of little air pockets rather than an inner tube. That was probably 25 to 30 years ago. They didn't take off........

I've ridden on solids once on some hire bikes in Paris... In the wet and over cobbles. All I can say is that it was scary, no compliance in the ride at all - it just bounced all over the place instead of gripping. Also the ride was very harsh.

The occasional flat is the price you pay for immeasurably better comfort and - more importantly - control. As every generation agrees, it's a price well worth paying. Solid tyres will never entirely go away. But they'll certainly never catch on either.

Surely with technology today, they can make solids with the same consistancy of innertubed ?

Nope, no one has been able to better the performance of pneumatic tyres. Solids are fine for slow vehicles on smooth surfaces like forklifts. F1 cars, jumbo jets and almost all roadgoing vehicles use pneumatics. Even wheelbarrows have pneumatics

I remember riding some "Green" solid tyres years and years ago. They were a bugger to fit, rode horribly - I knew nothing in those days but they felt sluggish, harsh and heavy. Eventually, when I could afford to get propper tyres and inner tubes I had to cut the solids off the rim - never again!

must admit have just swapped wheels and tyres over as it felt horrible today so will see in morning if it feels better
