Some evil git has gone into the local cemetery early in the morning and shot dead 30 rabbits. I presume it's someone who has a grudge against them because they tend to eat the flowers on the graves. Funnily enough i was talking to the bloke who looks after the cemetery, in his hut this evening. He asked me if the bread i had in my hands was for the rabbits and birds as i take brown bread in for them. He didn't say anything about the incident, instead a woman who also feeds them stopped me on my way home and said "have you heard the horrible news"? Lots of people commented on how many rabbits there were and how "cute" they were. At times you could count around 40 rabbits at the bottom of the cemetery. Anyway, that's it. Thirty dead rabbits, all because some loonball's flowers have been eaten!

"It is illegal to shoot an airgun on any land, including common land, river banks, public land, recreation areas or playing fields and land covered by water, i.e. lakes, ponds, canals and rivers where you do not have full permission from the lands owner or its tenant. It is also illegal to fire an airgun closer than 50 feet (15 metres) from the centre of a public highway, bridleway or footpath, if your shooting causes upset or inconvenience to those using the highway"

They weren't poorly were they? I used to have to cull poorly rabbits in my dim and dark past.

It's a difficult one....cuddly bunnies versus desecrating a loved one's grave. I think if rabbits were digging up my father's grave and eating the flowers, I'd be pretty hacked off, not to say distraught.

I've noticed over the years that they like Chrysanthemums. They don't dig up soil or anything. They just eat flower heads. I've had the flowers on my dad's grave chewed off. Yes i curse, but i'd go a day or two without feeding the buggers to get my revenge. i wouldn't harm them

Perhaps he didn't say anything because it isn't true. It's like people who tell me about all the dogs that get stolen or how people are putting poison down around here. It often turns out there is the tiniest grain of truth in it or absolutely no truth at all. I'd verify it for myself first.

They don't dig up soil or anything.

These are not the sort of rabbits with which I am familiar.

Those of you who endure 'Strictly ...' as I do will have noted the appearance of Chas 'n' Dave this weekend, performing a vignette of their finest work 'Rabbit' (but then there are so many classics to choose from when you consider their ouevre) which contains the lines:

You got more rabbit than Sainsbury's,
It's time you got it off your chest,

and as I sat there on the sofa contemplating the fact that I was sat in my pyjamas watching Ed Balls dancing at a time when the pubs were open, it occurred to me that you can't buy rabbit at the supermarket anymore. As a younger person I used to buy it frozen in cubes from Tesco (I don't know the Cockney S.I. for rabbit - but it came in a bag that weighed about a kilo I think, and each cube was I guess a cubic inch) but alas, the cheap protein source for students is no more. I bet you can't get frozen turkey mince either.

How do you know that whoever was shooting didn't have permission? Our parish council allows shooting on its land to control rabbits, squirrels and other pests.

I don' think Hyndburn Borough Council would give permission to someone to go on a rabbit cull in the early hours. If they have done then it wants publicising, but i just don't think they would. It would be illegal anyway as the area where they were allegedly shot is too close to a public footpath. Even if there's no one on that footpath it's still illegal to fire an air rifle 15 meters or less near to that path
