Well you did leave it unattended...
We had our bin nicked a few years back. It was returned less than a week later, filled with paint (no cans, just the paint) nappies, maggots, and god knows what else. Oh, and there was an interesting crack down the side, so there was a little "seepage." Guess some twunt had a bit of a mess to clean up and didn't want to sully his own bin. Explained to the Council and they provided a new one FOC.
This is Test Valley mind, not Southampton - might be able to do something since its blatantly not your fault. Have you called Actionline? 0800 5 191919

We havent called AL yet, they dont tend to answer outside of 10-4 on a working week.

I emailed my LA once on an unrelated matter, (about introducing a cycle lane tbh), and I did get a reply...................... 6 months later!

Over here on the wild side (The New Forest) we still use bags so no problems with lost bins. Foxes, cats and gulls can be a PITA if they are put out overnight so I make sure the rubbish does not get put out until I take the dog out for her walk at about half-seven.

In my area the bin becomes the responsibility of the LA after 7:00pm the night before collection. If it gets nicked after it is left out for collection they can not charge you for a new one. You do however get a half size one instead.
I D-Lock my bin to my railings at all other times no because it gets nicked but because of the crazy of throwing them off the balconies

Cant remember if I said before, but an old boy in a dredger pulled a load of old bikes and bins out of the river Itchen by the bridge last year. It seems the drunken game is wheel a full bin, or stolen heavy item of choice, up the bridge and luzz it off. Apparently he does it as an act of charity so the boats can get through without damage.

I find it so tragic that so people take pleasure out of such acts. Hell most of us have done some stupid things whilst drunk but I have never stolen private property nor have I done anything that would cause damage to property. Kudos to the old boy but a shame he needs to do it.
I wonder how many strangely go missing after 1900 the night before collection, despite the fact it probably went missing on some other day and time.
As for burglars using them, I thought you would hear one a mile away being dragged down the street in the middle of the night, suppose you could claim you've been to a fancy dress party as a bin man or even a burglar if bill looks inside and its full of DVD players etc which you suddenly have to account for.
When we got our wheelie bins, we were informed that when they are new and clean, they are a star item to be nicked as they get used for making home brew in.
In fact, I wonder if anyone has found someone fast asleep in one, after they was tanked up and took shelter from the rain in it.
