On a ride today my wife was doing iconic peter Sagan winning move, only on one side where he grips his shoulder doing the hulk ,she we holding a bug that had ventured in her cycling jersey and then chewed into her shoulder ,instant raised area around the bite, only her!
Seconded - it does look like a reaction to horse fly, and they can be nasty. If you're ok with off the shelf anti-histamine (hay fever tablets are the most likely source) , it's worth trying as a way of tackling the reaction. Do keep an eye on it though, and docs if it doesn't improve!
I was hospitalised for a week and had eight weeks off work with cellulitis that had an insect bite as the probable initiator and the site of the bite being the point of infection. I've never been in so much pain. If the swelling persists, grows and feels hot, get to a doctor for industrial strength antibiotics. They didn't work for me and I had to endure intravenously administered antibiotics and daily injections of anti blood coagulants in hospital.
