Earlier this morning i was out in the back streets of wimbledon in the car.

Pulled out of t-junction into double parked street with maybe 1.5 car widths between he parked cars.

just coming into the far end (100m?) was a cyclist i had passed earlier in the morning: quality racing bike, full lycra gear, nice cosy neoprene overshoes: all the look of a Club cyclist.

I stopped. Did not enter the narrow street and flashed him to come through, which he did.

What he did not do however was look at me or acknowledge me in any way. No flick of the hand or nod going past to acknowledge the courtesy.

Grrrrrr

Tell me about it, I nearly hit a cyclist coming round a corner which I took at speed and as no one was behind me I went right out. Nearly hit a cyclist on the opposite side.

I shout sorry, then realised she was going up a one way street !

Yup, once again, neoprene clad, complete with slightly odd looking white overshoes, weaving through slow moving traffic, through the red light and onto the roundabout.

SLAP!

You seem to have posted in the wrong place, you need the: 'all cyclists are wan*ers' chat forum. Off you pop.

Lack of courtesy is annoying whoever is responsible. I can see the OP's point, and it isn't that "all cyclists are wan*ers".

I'm just about to hit 1000 cycling miles in 2010 - so, with all *due* respect, why don't you pop off instead.

Sometimes I can't always wave to acknowledge a driver who lets me out, since I need to pull on the bars to get moving. I can normally manage a subtle nod though

There is no place for courtesy on our roads. If you're concentrating on waving and thanks and checking to see if a driver has noticed your wave then you're not watching the road. It's as bad as using a mobile phone whilst driving/ riding and should incur a mandatory 3 points for a driver and £50 fine for a cyclist.

There's a difference in concentrating on it & the act it's self. General observation should give you an idea of someone's gone out of their way to make your life easier & when safe I will acknowledge that with a nod or wave/hand up, generally I'm not even aware if the other road user was looking in my direction or not. I've given a gesture of thanks, if they see it & respond to it or not is down to their observational skills.

Does that mean you have your hands on the handlebars at all times?

I never expect anything now...If I do actually get a nod that I actually exist it's nice.

I think I get more acknowledgement from peds though.(of the good kind)

nonsense! a simple nod without even making eye contact is sufficient.

or are you being ironic and i'm missing your point?
