Sometimes you just can't stop at the red light

A ridiculous question.

First of all I approach all lights with caution - their mere presence is indicative of danger, be it a crossing, junction or whatever.

And if it flicks to amber I start slowing down with a view to stopping in a progressive, predictable manner - not tilting at it flat out then having to worry about stopping on a sixpence with the vehicle behind me anally invading me.
I see you are forgetting about the tipper truck less than 1 second behind you.
A truck which is showing no signs of slowing. Good luck stopping in front of that.

Can I point out that Gaz at 20mph is far from "tilting it flat out". On that bit of road, which I know well, it's a comfortable and easy cruising speed for him.

I'm still amazed how you'd try to slow down the tipper lorry with your bike in this situation. Really, that puts you into an extreme risk-taker category. If you knew the sorts of extreme sports many of my friends do, then you'd also know I'm not giving that prize lightly.

6 pages on whether a cyclist or tipper truck run a red am I missing the point? Or is it as ridiculous as it sounds

My personal gut instinct watching the video would have been to stop as soon as the yellow started.

However I do not drive in big city traffic so I can understand that may be considered wrong by those more experienced on here.

I figure if you got T-Boned going through the red it's going to be viewed as your own fault for RLJ if someone smacks you.

I am interested to know if the helmet cameras miss things because I can see the view tilt (logically your head shoulder checking) but do not see the lorry from that cam. Is your eye view different to what the camera catches because of the angle ?

I have just noticed something else (on the 5th viewing!). There was another bike quite a way back from you, behind the truck and looks to have jumped it much later
There's seven seconds between the start of the rear-view clip and the solid white line.

Would this be enough time to slow down safely?
And for 5 seconds of those 7 seconds, the light was green.

20mph is going fast in a 30mph limit where most vehicles floor it to get through that junction, and where a tipper lorry driver is already displaying signs of impatience?

What speed do you suggest Gaz slows down to in that situation, Mr P?
I don't think that it is. It's about whether you could have avoided having to make a split second decision by anticipation. If you were aware of a truck right on your tail and had at least six seconds before you got to a stop line where a light could be about to change might it have been a safer option to slow earlier thus avoiding what happened in the clip?
Obviously slowing down gradually is better than stopping quickly.
Could I have done that in this situation? I can't comment, this happened several months ago and I can't recall when I became aware of the driver on my arse. It may have only been several meters before the stop line.

Not only to what speed should he slow, but where in the video?
