I realise my taste in music isn't to everyone's liking so I might not be the best judge, but is it ok to say I absolutely hate that song? - droning load of old drivel from start to finish.

I prefer Leonard Cohen's original - I think there was about 4 or 5 versions out at one point.

[quote name='swee'pea99']Paul Young also did a cover of Tom Waits's Soldier's Things...why anyone would attempt to cover Tom Waits is beyond me.

Like Rod F**king Stewart trying to do ... oh, whatever Tom Waits song he murdered. I'm too depressed to look it up.

Somewhere over the Rainbow by Eva Cassidy is (MHO) far superior to the original version as is her take on Fields of Gold.

Just noticed that the thread title is songs that became BETTER KNOWN the second time around... so for this I'd have to say "I Shot the Sheriff" by Clapton (originally by Bob Marley) is both better known and (again, IMO) just better really.

Baby Can I Hold You? - Boyzone. Probably more famous and better selling than Tracy Chapman's original (not even sure if her version was released as a single) but the bland insipid pretty boys sucked every bit of life, soul, and emotion from it. Truly dreadful.

I liked Johnny Cash's version of U2's One. Proof that U2 aren't bad song writers, they just need to pass their songs on to someone who can sing....
