'What's so funny about peace love and understanding?' - big song for Elvis Costello and Curtis Stigers. Written and recorded by the excellent Nick Lowe. Stiger's version was used for the film The Bodyguard and the soundtrack sold 17 million copies, it made NL very wealthy indeed!

In fact, a lot of hip hop translates well to other music styles. Here's an uncensored version of Ben Folds doing Dr Dre's "B*****s Ain't S**t"". It contains a lot of swearing, misogyny (albeit tongue in cheek - I think the purpose of covering this song was to point out just how much hip hop routinely gets away with) and the "N" word, so don't say I didn't warn you.

I preferred the original Living in the Love of the Common People by Nicky Thomas to Paul Young's version.

Good job there's no C&W fans on the forum to point out that Waylon Jennings covered this song in 1967 -3 years before Nicky T.:o)

As per another thread: "Oh, we have both kinds, honey - Country and Western" (Blues Bros)

Can you do a better version of a song than Anne Lennox?
YES
Here is the orignial of No more I love yous

Also strangely, while I really dont like anything to do with Miley Cyrus her version of the Joe McXfactor song is really well done and it is odd that it was not a hit for her.

(listen without the picture is better as her grinning face is a bit offputting)

In praise of covers - Flying Lizards "Money" was tons better than the orignial.

Aretha Franklin's version of 'Respect' better that Otis Redding's.

And while we are on the subject of Otis, his 'A Change is Gonna Come' is better than Sam Cooke's

Stones' 'Not Fade Away' better than Buddy Holly's

And stone me if you must but SuBo's version of Wild Horses comes very close to eclipsing the Rolling Stones version.

It's Tori Amos's version of Smells Like Teen Spirit.
A better writer than me once said "I guess you go too far/ when pianos try to be guitars."

I have to go and listen to that now

Tell that to Keane!

Usually, 'tis true, and pretty much anything I write now is going to be anally over-analytical about what is just a pop song, but the original was so original and so defining of the grunge generation that what Tori Amos has done is spectacular. Same words, same tune, different tempo, different soul, just as powerful.

In my anally over-analytical opinion.;)
