well, let me put in a word for these songs.

Most of them are well-crafted - if the lyrics don't stand up to critical examination, then they can hardly be faulted on coherence and invention. Most of them are a bit on the plaintive side, but yearning is a human thing, without which we'd be less worthwhile than we are. And, yes, most of them rely on a big long note at the end of the chorus, but, hey, at least they're not mumbling or shouting....

I don't honestly get the reason for the lighter but the sentiment... yes, I can get there even if it's not quite my thing. I'm a sucker for that Depeche Mode track - even down to the self-mocking last lines - but then I'm a sucker for Depeche Mode generally. In fact, I consider them to be my 'weakeness'!

Cars, Drive, yep, agreed. It's one of those songs. Ditto Foreigners 'I Wanna Know What Love is'. I don't do stadium rock as such but, if I did, I guess Dire Straights' 'Private Investigations' might have me waving my arms, even at the risk of being on my own!

To be honest, the first song I thought of when I read the thread title was...
