You don't unlock these, you root them and it can be done by anyone who can follow the instructions, there are several web pages which give clear instructions, download these, the appropriate free ware and proceed, step by step.

Most important is to back up all your data, numbers, etc in case it goes pear shaped.

Do note that these 'rooted' phones will no longer accept sony updates and will have to be manually updated as per the rooting process.

I'm going to work round this kind of problem by buying an unlocked phone in the first place! (Having said that, I will probably end up tinkering with the phone to put the latest software on it, unless it is already up to date when I get it.)

The Xperia S is on the shortlist for my next phone. I can't afford a new one but there is just a remote chance that I might get one on eBay within budget but I am more likely to go further down the Xperia range though.

What do you think of your phone? (Oh, and if you don't mind me asking - if you didn't get it on a contract deal, how much did you pay for it? They usually seem to go for £200+ on eBay.)

I've just bought a tiny Sony Ericsson Xperia Ray on eBay for just over £70 including postage! I'm gambling that I will be able to put up with its small (but beautiful) screen. It is a trade-off between ease of use and ease of carrying.
