What I'm ideally looking for is a high-spec, hub-geared (Rohloff preferably, or Alfine 11), medium framed mountain bike. If it has a high quality dynamo hub LED light set up too, all the better.

I had a heart attack a few years ago, so it needs to be lightweight. I'll be using it in the local woods and bridleways in winter, so it needs to be robust and reliable. The terrain varies a lot so it needs good air suspension. I want great gear selection and good feel and modulation on the brakes.

Because of the heart attack, I won't be tearing through the woods at breakneck speed. Nor will I be throwing myself down a mountain. That said, I have a Whyte Montpellier hybrid and love the quality components, so don't want to downgrade on the mountain bike.

I have another ad for a non-hub version as I know they're thin on the ground.

My budget is around £1k. This is flexible for the right bike though.

So, what do you have?

I don't have a bike which would meet your requirements but I do have a pair of 29er mud tyres. It sounds as if you may not need anything like them because you won't be doing anything too extreme but I thought I'd post here just in case the paths near you deteriorate to swamps. They're Maxxis Beavers with very little wear.

Your best bet is looking for something off the shelf and you'll struggle at £1k or you prowl e-bay - at a rough calc:-

Wheelset - complete with tyres and tubes and Rohloff disc rotor - £1400-1500 or Alfine 11 - £900
Frame - needs to accommodate rohloff/hub gear chain tensioning - £500+ could get cheaper if you're happy to use a chain tensioner
Forks - 29er boingy forks will be - £250+
All the other bits - £250+

Not entirely sure if I want to sell it – not sure it's what you'd want but I had my Trek Sawyer 29er built with an Alfine 11 speed, rigid tail and rigid forks though and I wouldn't call it light, but it's got a lot of character. Message me if you want to know more

Thanks guys. I ended up compromising on the gears and getting a used Whyte 729.

Think I'll build a Rohloff hub one though, buying bits as and when funds allow.

Watch this space ;)

Thanks again for the advice and pointers
