You have a smart tv then - you should be able to get the popular streaming services. I asked, wondering whether to recommend a BluRay player with streaming capabilities, but the answer's no. Just bob along to a Richer Sounds/Currys or similar and buy their cheapest, slimmest player, taking care to ensure it's reverse compatible with CDs - I think they all are, but doesn't hurt to just check. That sorts your legacy content, and then streaming takes care of the new stuff going forward.

Can I assume the UHD** is overkill and that 1080 will do what I need ?

You've got quite a small room, the viewing distance isn't huge, so I'd say no need for anything more than manufacturers' base models.

In theory nobody (who has streaming) needs a bluray/DVD player these days. BUT quite a few times we've said "let's watch so-and-so tonight" and it's either been taken off whatever platform, or if on Prime, it's gone to rent or buy. We have quite a lot of physical films, and often we've had the disc so we play it. We play DVDs and Bluerays on the Xbox.

For the cost of a 1080p bluray player it's a no brainer. Hang onto your DVDs. They can't stop you playing them in the future when a studio's done a deal to sell the rights!

As @ColinJ and I were discussing on Saturday's ride, there should be a single streaming service to rule them all with everything on it! We have Prime, Disney and Netflix, and it often takes longer to find which damn service a film is on than it does to rummage through the cabinet!

A decent bluray player would have a better picture for DVDs than a DVD player because it can upscale the resolution. It can't magically make it as high res as a bluray but it can make it a little sharper than the basic DVD resolution. Edited to add: more recent DVD players can upscale too.
