I am a member of both of these and both appeal for different reasons:

Club one is Southend Wheelers:
Meet every Sunday at 9am & 10am at Canewdon Village Hall. This is a small (ish) but very friendly club who put on a good array of events outside of the club runs on a Sunday. They have a weekly ten in steeple (april - aug), host a few road races, have a club road race in June at Hog Hill, put on BBQ's and other social stuff throughout the year. It is racing biased but you will always find someone to ride with regardless of your ability.

Club 2 is the South East Essex Member Group of CTC:
Meet every Sunday in the Cafe in Wickford Market 9.15 am for a 9.30 start. You can ride all day but the trick is not being able to keep up on a bike but on being able to cope with the amount of food, tea and cake you will stop for. It is absolutely free if you are a member of the CTC. This is great club for a beginner or those who prefer more sedate cycling. It is not as full of the weirdy beardies as you may expect of a CTC member group. It is a very friendly club and very active with away rides throughout the summer. Please note that if you maintain if you average 15mph avg + although there is normally a faster group the pace and group riding discipline can become a little frustrating. The onus is on the food and social side of things as opposed to bum up and head down stuff.

There is also a 40+ cycling club that meet on Tuesday and Thursday 9.30-10am in Rayleigh High St and Essex Roads a large cycling club in Billericay. I do not have much experience of these two.
