Riding to work this morning across the Northam Bridge I noticed a group of 5 Police Officers grouped at the Northam exit. Next thing I know they are signalling me to pull over.
After the initial confusion of whether they actually meant little old me or the car behind, I pulled in and had a really nice chat with an Officer who informed me they were running a combined Motor and Bicycle safety campaign. He commended my dayglo orange cycling top and my numerous lights and reflectors and then gave me a rather nice, free, zip-up hi-vis vest - RESULT!

He requested that I put it on there and then as the local press were aware of the campaign and they wanted visibility (sic) so I continued on to work looking rather like a hi-vis licorice allsort LOL!

Nice!

Were they also handing out tins of Day-Glo paint for motorists driving dark coloured cars?

Yeah I got one last year, again the week before the clocks went back. That was on St Mary's St. But zip up....I might have to go seek them out, the velcro ones soon start to flap about.

It is a much nicer hi-vis than I have seen in any of the shops round my way. I think it is actually meant for motorcyclists - hence the zip.

They may well have also had rucksack covers but I said that I never use one as I have panniers.

When I lived in Southampton (30 years ago) the police didn't give away hi viz clothing

Haven't they got better things to do?
