..are they needed in all cases?

I am currently trying to fit a Tiagra 10sp cassette onto a Shimano 9/10 sp Ultegra wheel, seems OK without a spacer, tightens up well but am reading that they are needed.

Just looked at my spare cassette (brand new still in packaging) and it has no spacer either

Help please.

Spacer if required would come with the wheels.

10 speed you say?

Tiagra you say?

Just so happens I fitted one of these the other day. If you have a look at the back of it there are some studs that sit proud, by about 1mm.

Seems the space has been replaces by the studs. I coudnt get the lockring on with the spacer, but with it removed it sat right and needed no adjustment of the rear derailier from a 105 10 speed with the spacer.
