I've started to take longer routes home, what with more light and warmer evenings, so I'm bumping into new cyclists that I've not seen before.

Last night I was cruising along quite happily at 17(ish)mph, when this guy came flying past me on a road bike. I'm not a fan of being overtaken, It's normally me doing the overtaking on my commute, but this guy was no commuter!!!!!!!! So I put on an extra spurt and caught up with him and tailed him for a couple of miles, until we reached a set of traffic lights which were red.

Firstly I was impressed because he stopped(!), then I noticed the carbon Spesh and the shaved legs!! Then he performed some sort of track stand dance, slight wiggles back and forth, using the brakes to trim it. Those lights must have been red for a good 3 minutes. Bloody impressive stuff.

Anyways, they turned green, he shot off, I kept up for 200 metres and that was it, hit a hill and he was gone..... Oh well, I got spanked.

Any track standing cummuters on here? If so, got any tips on how to learn this art? (No toe clips, on grassy area I guess!)

I see a bloke on a fixie with no brakes track-standing at set of lights most days, but again, he looks to be superfit, and leaves me standing when he takes off. I guess the fact hes already connected to his bike saves him a bit of time.

The trick to track standing is to have the front wheel on a slight incline and turned about 30 degrees then pressure on the pedals to roll backwards and forwards an inch or two to keep your balance.

Have been practicing this for a month now and can just about do it providing that a) that I can do a bit of 'shuffling' rather than standing stock still and b) that the lights change in less than about 30 seconds

If they don't, I just casually step down as if I was bored waiting for the lights :becool:
