I have them on my Mtb originally put them on for commuting to the train with normal shoes and used them with spd shoes rest of the time. They are good but I wouldn't want to pedal far without the spd shoes.

I am not sure. It's the ones you can use flat shoes or spds with. Those above don't seem to have enough of a platform

They are designed to use with flat shoes but your righ they don't have a huge platform have a look for the double sided ones, one side spd one side flat they have a better platform
