It doesn't really matter, if you go down on ice it will be so fast you wont be able to do anything to stop it.

If you are worried about slipping when you put your foot down at junctions Id rather go with cleats. The surface area of a normal shoe won't do anything to increase the friction and I'd rather have something pointy on the bottom of my shoe to dig into the ice if needed.

Keep your SPDs a little looser than normal (on the pedals, not the cleats on your shoes!) - I have my MTB SPDs pretty loose so I can easily pop out of them. I keep my road SPDs a lot tighter ... but then there is not a snowball's chance in hell ('scuse the pun!) that I will be using my road bike in this weather! Big chunky tyres please!
