Well first ride on the -SL today, I must say I much prefer them so far.

Only messed up one pedal flip and that was at some lights going up hill, I didn't fall but I struggled a little.

Got the shoes cheap as ex-display and found some cheap R550 pedals.

Going up hill, and off the saddle felt much better!

I've always used SPDs with the £20 M520 pedals on both my bikes for the last six years... I really rate M520s.

Same here - they're inexpensive but have great build quality and reliability. They're not heavy, and are versatile to be used on any bike IMO.

The main thing I like about SPD vs SPD-SL is that you can walk in them with ease. Whenever I see people waking in SPD-SLs they just look so uncomfortable, and sometimes frankly scared of falling over! No such worries with the SPD system :okay:

By the way, who has serviced M540s?

Back in the day I used to regularly clean and regrease my (rat trap) pedal bearings. I just replaced a pair of M540s (the right has gone a big grindy) with a view to servicing the old ones at my leisure when I can get around to looking at some videos of how to do so. Is it easy?

I have. It's peasy.

The older I get, the faster I used to be ...
SPDs on the bikes in the winter, and any time I might be walking a bit, including these single sided Wellgos on the 'best' bike (you can get SPD type pedals that look right on a road bike)
