Speaker recommendations? Cheap, small and close to wall...

Ok, not 'cheap' necessarily, but not silly money or obscure. I'm looking to get a couple of pairs of small speakers to go high up in the corners of a large room. When I say small, I don't mean necessarily those tiny 3" sq jobbies - I'd be happy with some bookshelf speaker size speakers - but I've heard they go muddy if you locate them right back against the wall. Any suggestions?

I'd recommend most things Sony. The speakers on my Sony MHC-EC79i are excellent quality, and don't lose any quality when placed back against a wall, as the hole for air to escape from is on the front, not the back.

Unfortunately I don't think you can buy the speakers separately from the main unit, but if you are looking for a whole HiFi, I would recommend this. If your speakers are going to be placed with the backs flat against the wall, I'd recommend getting a pair with the holes for escaping air on the sides or front, not back.

Don't do small; I like my Mission 753's. If I did do small I'd see if Mordaunt Short had anything available. If not then 'they' say, Bose tiddlies are rather good.

Cheap, cheerful and small? Q Acoustics 1010i. They have fittings for brackets and are the smallest full range speaker I can think of..... Though if you have the means, some Bowers and Wilkins LM1s. They're designed for corner wall mounting and sound good. Most 'bookshelf' speakers are designed to work at their best on stands and a little away from the wall. Those 'air holes' are bass reflex ports that are designed to squeeze more bass out of little boxes. By moving the speakers closer or further away from the wall, one can tune the bass response to a certain extent. You'd have to be bloody lucky to get the right bass response at the fixed distance a wall bracket will give you whilst using regular bookshelf design, hence looking at designs that are meant to be wall mounted. Tannoy do a wall mount design that's at the value end of the market too......
