HI all

I'm looking at buying a road bike that can take mudguards and a (light) rack for fast commutes and long distance rides.
One bike I've looked at is a secteur. Anyone tried out fitting guards and a rack to this bike?

At the mo it's a toss up between the Secteur in EBC and a steel framed audax in my LBS. The LBS still hasn't got the audax bike in my size yet, so not been able to take it for a test ride so far.

Yes, I have a Secteur with rack, panniers and mudguards.
I use it for my daily commute.
It's a great bike.

I've got a Secteur too. (Elite 2010 model). It has all the proper mounting bosses for a pair of rear panniers and they work well. My bike came with 25 mm tyres, but I think I would have to replace them with 23s in order to get enough clearance to fit halfway decent mudguards though the brake calipers. This may not be the case with other Secteur models. Great bike, BTW. Alas, rubbish engine....

I have a 2010 elite secteur with a topeak rack and matching slide on bag with fold out panniers.

I have crud road racers on mine and they work well with 23mm tyres, but a bit of a rub with 25`s

I will upload a pic when virgin media`s fiber optic superfast broadband goes any faster than dial up.

And some detail shots. You can just see where I have sticky taped some bits of rubber to the bits on the guards that butt up against the forks and seat stays to prevent rub marks (Hopefully).

Also, you can see how I had to bend the racks seat stay supports to avoid them fouling the brake caliper.

Hi all

Wow it does look like a versatile bike!
So:
Ian -which secteur model do you have? Which mudguards are you using and are you using 23s?

All - does carrying a load on the rack affect the handling of the bike? How much weight can you carry on the back? Are the wheels OK with carrying a load and potholes?

I'm not going to use the secteur for heavy loads as I already have a Scott Sportster hybrid for things like supermarket trips, towpaths and tank duties. It would be nice to have a faster bike though.

Another recommendation from me. I bought a Secteur Sport earlier this year and it has been great. I haven't managed to fit mudguards and don't really want to fit narrower tyres, but have put a rack and panniers on when cycling from London to Paris and further on into France.

I have never noticed an effect on the handling, but obviously you can feel the extra weight if you are carrying a decent bit of shopping. I have used the standard cxp22 and shimano cheapy r500 wheels and both are still straight. If you have to go over a pot hole stand up on the pedals and let the bike pivot under you, rather than staying aeated and ploughing through.

I have the 2010 Elite . Same as Pauls. (There are photo's of it in my albums)
I am running Specialized Armadillo Elite 23's. They are pretty bombproof and do me well for a daily 35 mile round commute through the mean streets of London. Handling of the bike is fine with rack and pannier. And I would rather carry stuff that way then use a rucksack.

It's just passed 12,000 commuting miles since I bought the bike 2 and a bit years back. And in that time I have had 3 crashes. (Over a bonnet, slip on leaf mulch and slip on frost) I have had to replace. Wheels, Cassette and Chain twice. tyres twice. Rear derailleur, crankset, bottom bracket and all cables. I changed the brakes from the stock tektro to 105's, made a whole heap of difference. The bike get's worked hard in all weathers.

It's a great bike and will serve you well.

Sorry know this thread is a bit old, but I have this bike & want to get a rack for it. Can you explain how to fix the rack on at the rear axle area as I don't know if mine has any space for a bolt/screw in that section where my previous hybrid did.

Thanks

Hi,

I dont think this rack can be fitted to the rear axle. I thought most Secteurs had the eyelets top and bottom to if it?

Sorry that's what I meant, part of the frame by the rear cassette. I think there's a space for the bolts but i think there's a blanking plate of sorts covering them. Don't want to try and remove them to find out they're not for that.

Looking at the images on flickr though I think that must be where the bottom of the rack is fitted on yours.

Cheers

Ah, I see.

Thats just a little rubber plug and should pop out to reveal the screwthread behind

Other options include the genesis equilibrium, but you have to fit the rack with p clips. However, it is a more audax style of bike. Also Pearson have something new out, accoriding to C+ which may also be in budget.
