Hi all - first non-intro post.

Most brakeset questions aren't specific (can I upgrade X with y) so hopefully this one will bring and accurate answer.

Can I swap the stock Tektro caliper brakes on my First F85 for a set of SRAM Rival calipers?

Also, when groupo parts (Tiagra 4600) and other consumables need replacing is it worth, when increased cost is modest (say up to 25%) going for 105 bits as I've done with the cassette - thinking rear mech etc

TIA

Brakes, yes you can.

Groupset parts, for performance it will make a slight difference if you upgrade the shifters, none at all with the mechs or cassette.

Apart from being a bit shinier that is, and who hasn't upgraded for that reason at some point?

Many thanks - as I thought/hoped. As/when bits wear out I'll replace with the cheapest (Tiagra+) compatible part - maybe allowing a 10% premium for added shininess!

Check the drop of the brake is the same. For example sram don't do a long drop (I had to use Shimano 57mm? Long drop brakes on my Genesis with a sram Rival groupset)

Note the 'higher' level cassettes may be a little lighter but they might also wear quicker so your 25% cost difference might be more as you have to replace more often. Maybe a consideration on a bike ridden a lot, esp in poor weather. May need to be more fastidious with cleaning for example too to preserve the life of your parts a bit

Thank you Vickster - very useful info - with a very low budget long term financial prudence is key; living in Cornwall, salt and the other 4 letter word beginning with S means without regular cleaning I assume parts do wear that much quicker
