Speed limit on motorways.

I tend to stick at the NS, find a nice lorry and plug in behind it. Unless the roads are empty, it makes zero difference to journey times on the 120 mile jaunt down to my Dads in Kent, but makes a big difference to fuel consumption and stress levels.

The added bonus being that you have an escape route (hard shoulder) should things suddenly happen.

Pretty easy to repurpose cameras to fine people abusing stopping distances.

It would generate an awful lot of ill will though, wouldn't it?
There's always a fine balance between law enforcement and a breakdown of trust and support for those doing the enforcing.

I am not a fan of surveillance, nor of criminalising the populations as the US have done - but people are dangerous idiots when it comes to cars.

Perhaps it's to reduce emissions? Not really a problem in a modern car where you can set the cruise control or speed limiter to 50. It may be safer as well, given that most people would stick to 50 if there were average speed cameras all the way. Unlike now, where some people do 55 and some do 90; more variance in the speed of vehicles often leads to more overtaking/more blindspots/more side swipes and collisions, not to mention everyone doing 50 would save lots of fuel.

GPS or road sign speed limit recognition enforced speed limiting should be compulsory. We don't sell air weapons capable of firing above the legal limit, or hairdryers that make noise beyond a legal threshold, and our houses must adhere to stringent planning and building control regulations, but even the most humble car can stamp on the legal speed limit by almost 50%.

Ban it, stop it dead.

It depends on the length of journey. I regularly make a 350 mile journey north via M5, M32, M1, A1M. A few years ago, before the endless average speed restrictions of 50mph for installation of concrete centre barriers and managed motoway upgrading it was possible to average 60mph or so - under 6 hours driving time. Recently if I manage less than 7 hrs driving I feel I've done well. I sympathise with the OP - Much of the time the work is finished, 3 lanes open, but the hard shoulder coned off for mile after mile, no sign of work being done.
