Just ordered a set of speedplay specific DMT Hydra shoes, do i need the carbon sole protector as the supplier didnt know anything about it. I can get some nice thin shim steel from work and make them but they are not overly expensive @ around £11 but wondered if i actually need them or not.

Cheers

Interesting discussion here http://velonews.competitor.com/2010/12/mtb/tech-faq-shoe-getting-beat-at-the-cleat_12279 that I think concludes they are needed. Looks like stainless steel is a good idea and from the work in it I would buy them rather than go the hassle of making them.
